What materials did you use?

~ scissors
~ iron
~ fabric
~ glass jar
~ tacky glue
~ iron on adhesive
~ candle
~ printer & paper

How did you make your Mother's Day Gift?

Recycle a glass jar (I used a large Pragu spaghetti jar). Measure a light colored fabric to match the height and width of the jar. Add another 2 inches to your height and another inch to your width.

Fold the bottom edge of fabric over 1/2 inch, iron and glue.
Fold the top edge of fabric over twice in half inch increments and glue (the fabric should stand about a 1/2 inch higher than the top of the jar).
Fold both edges of the width of the fabric over 1/2 inch each and glue.
This gives the fabric a clean look.

Next, print a picture of a silhouette of your choice off the computer. This is the silhouette I used:

Cut a piece of iron-on adhesive to fit the sihouette, and iron it onto the back of a darker piece of fabric.
Paper clip your silhouette to the dark fabric and carefully cut out the picture.

Place the silhouette onto your lighter fabric where you want it and iron the silhouette to the fabric.

Glue one edge of the lighter fabric to the back of the jar making sure the bottom of the fabric just reaches the bottom of the jar. Wrap the fabric around the jar and glue the second edge of the fabric to the first.

Place a candle into the jar. A taller jar will need a taller candle. Place an inch of sand in the bottom of the jar to help hold the candle in place. Enjoy!

Hi Emma,

Jill emailed me her silhouette (thanks Jill!) and I've added it to the page. Hopefully I made it the right size - let me know if it works for you!

This looks georgeous but could you make it the opposite and cut the silhouette out, and use a dark fabric? definitely gonna try with a large rectangle. will see how it turns out.

A good teacher is like a candle ... it consumes itself to light the way for others.
