Homemade Scented Sachet Gift

by Cabin Annie

Cupid has a sure hit with this sweet homemade scented doily sachet. Not only is it pretty but it smells divine. Hang one in your closet, your car or give as a gift to someone for them to sweeten their linens.

Materials

  • 2 x 6" doilies of the same design
  • 1 cotton ball
  • Ecru thread ("ecru" is a pale yellow/cream color)
  • Needle
  • Pins
  • 1 yd of either red yarn or 1/8" satin ribbon
  • Scrap of red plastic to make arrows (I used a container lid)
  • Essential oil
  • Buttons or beads (optional)

How to make

  1. With your pins secure your two doilies in several places (3-4 should do). Now weave your yarn or ribbon in and out in a 2" diameter circle in the center of the doilies. When you are about half done with your circle slip your cotton ball between the doilies and pin it to one, then complete your circle. Leave the tails of the yarn alone for now (don't trim them) just pin them out of your way. Add a loop for hanging.

  2. With your ecru thread attach your buttons or beads at the points and continue around your doilies securing them together. You could instead use glue to add your decorations and hold the two doilies together - it would be faster but remember your doily would then be stiff.

  3. Now cut an arrow out of your red plastic or any plastic and paint it red. Attach it across your cotton ball center and tie it on with your yarn tails finish with a bow. You can use red cardstock but be aware it might bleed onto the doily from the essential oil. It most likely won't show with your red yarn or ribbon. (Sounds like a voice of experience doesn't it? Yep!)

  4. After you get your sachet completed add essential oil to the doily from the back soaking the cotton ball.

Handy tips

Since I made this one for Valentine's Day of course it has red on it but you sure could do it in any color and leave off the arrow. I added a heart made from a red pipe cleaner at the top and left off the ribbon hanger on the one in the picture you will notice.

If you are planning on hanging it in your car you may want your doilies stiff so either you can stiffen them before start your sachet using starch or sugar water but make sure not to stiffen the center as you want it pliable so your cotton ball can puff up.

I sewed mine and have it hanging on the wall in my bathroom and it hangs just fine. I do think if I were going to use it in my car I would use hot glue and run dual lines one around the outside edge and around an inch from the edge. That or stiffen the doilies to start with.

This is just one sample of how I keep what sanity I have left, designing crafts, quilts and more. If you would like to see more of my "prescriptions" for a happy crafter check out my blog where I vent my ideas I just have to share with anyone who will listen and stories, recipes and more or my website displaying my line of handmade jewelry - I welcome any and all comments.

Thanks, until next time-
