Valentine Crafts For Kids: Homeschool Love Hearts

My kids made these Valentines hearts as a homeschool fun activity to give to friends...

What materials did you use?

Dead easy ones! This is a really simple Valentine craft for kids which is perfect from the smallest child who can only just hold a pen on up through High School. All you need is

  • blotting paper

  • marker pens

  • glitter pens (optional)

How did you make it?

Take some blotting paper and cut out some Valentine heart shapes. Get a bunch of chunky marker pens and scribble some dots and squiggles of color on the paper.

Add drops of water and watch the dots separate and flow up the paper to make beautiful rainbow colors and delicate hues. You could use a paintbrush to drip water on the blotting paper but we used a pipette out of a medicine bottle - my children loved squeezing it and watching the droplets come out!

Anything else you'd like to share about your project?

This is a great project using chromatography to create beautiful effects - it even teaches a bit of homeschool science along the way!

Cute, cute, cute!
by: Mary

I want to say thanks for such a great idea. Super job kids! I travel a lot for business and often try to come up with little craft projects and gifts I can mail to my grandchildren. They all love to craft and this project will be perfect!
Just one question... Where did you purchase the blotting paper?

Where to buy Blotting Paper
by: Sonya

Thanks Mary that's so kind of you to post a comment on our kids love hearts. I can genuinely say we really enjoyed ourselves - the inks spread out so prettily they are fascinating to watch even as an adult and the fact that black turns into different colors still seems amazing!
You can buy blotting paper on Amazon cheaply; otherwise you could ask in a local stationery store.
Best wishes

How fun

Thank you Sonya for sharing this idea.. I to have a grandson who loves to 'craft' and that just makes Grandma very happy.. lol. so this will go into a crafty box and in the mail for him.. being 2, he knows where his craft box is and helps get his paint shirt on when he is ready to craft..and I know mommy will love to add this one to his box.. so a big thank you for sharing..
Also Mary another paper you can use would be 'Watercolor' paper that you can find at Big Lots or even sometimes at the Dollar Tree.. and Michaels or any craft store. We don't have stationary stores near us, so I had to make do.. and this is what I used to 'make-do'

Great Activity

I teach Pre-K and we've done this using coffee filters & washable markers. The kids draw some designs & then we spray w a water sprayer. Super cheap & easy!

Yes - this has proved to be one of my most popular pages and I'm pleased to say I've had a lot of great feedback. It's really simple but always amazing - time to get on and make some more for this year!
