Many women sew, and a pin cushion would be a sweet homemade gift for Mother's Day. Here are four free pin cushion patterns that are full of spring time cheer!
I recently needed a pair of knee hi hose for a project and purchased them for 33 cents at WalMart. They come in a small plastic ball container with a snap on lid. I came up with an idea to use the lid as a base for making wrist pin cushions.
What materials did you use?
FLOWER
- Lid from hose container
- 3/4" Elastic
- Scrap material for center
- 1 1/2" styrofoam ball
- Felt- your color choice
- Beads
- Hot glue gun
LADY BUG- Lid from container
- 3/4" Elastic
- 1 1/2"styrofoam ball
- Red and black felt
- 2 Short pieces black pipe cleaner
- 2 Small beads
- Hot glue gun
CHICK- Lid from container
- 1" and 1 1/2" Styrofoam balls
- 3/4" Elastic
- Yellow baby washcloths (97 cents for a pkg of 4 at WalMart)
- Yellow yarn
- Green felt
- 2 Google eyes
- Scrap of orange felt or foam
- Felt flower
- Hot glue gun
BUNNY- Lid from Container
- 3/4" Elastic
- 1 1/2" Styrofoam ball
- Pink baby washcloth
- Orange and pink felt or foam
- Felt flower
- 2 Google eyes
- 2 Pink pom poms
- 1 Pink wood bead
- Green and black thread
- Ribbon
How did you make it?For each pin cushion, you will need to make the base for the wrist. Cut 2 slits in center of lid, wide enough for elastic. Poke elastic through each slit. Measure wrist and sew elastic ends closed.
Flower pattern:Cut about 1/4 off styrofoam ball. You will use the larger part. Shave off a small amount around the edge until it fits snugly in lid. Cover with a circle of material and glue to the back of ball. Put glue on material so it doesn't melt too much of the styrofoam. Cut 12 petals from felt. You will use 2 per petal. Sew beads on 6 of them. Then sew another to the backs of each so your stitching does not show. Cut one leaf from green felt and glue onto inner side of lid. Hot glue one petal at a time around the inner side of lid. Put hot glue in lid and press styrofoam center in, holdly firmly until glue is set. Use center of flower to stick pins into.

Lady bug pattern:Cut styrofoam ball as directed for flower. Cover the same but use black felt or material. Cut a circle from red felt slightly larger than body. Cut a pie shaped wedge 3/4 of the way through the red circle. Glue to body at top and sides. Punch holes in black foam or felt and glue on to wings for dots. Cut two small pieces of pipe cleaner and insert above head, securing with a dab of glue on the ends. Slide a small bead on to each tip. You can use any part of bug to stick pins in to.
Chick pattern:Cut a circle from green felt larger than lid. Going around the edge, cut points into felt to resemble grass. Apply around the inside of lid by gluing. To make the chick, lay wash cloth flat and place the smaller ball in center. Gather cloth, pulling tightly and tie yarn into knot. Gather a small puff of cloth on sides for wings and tie off under each with yarn. Place larger ball in and gather tightly. Tie yarn in knot under it. Cut off excess wash cloth at bottom. Put a generous amount of glue in lid and press in chick, holding firmly until set. Glue on eyes and beak. Glue flower on top of head. You can use any part of chick to stick pins into.
Bunny pattern:Cut styrofoam ball as directed for flower. Cut ears from pink felt or foam. Glue ends of ears into lid on side. Cut circle from pink wash cloth and cover ball tightly, gluing it in back. Glue into lid, holding firmly until glue is set. Snip wood bead in half and glue 2 or 3 black pieces of thread under one half. Glue eyes and nose with whiskers onto face. Glue pink pom poms on for cheeks. Glue flower on to one ear. Tie small bow with ribbon and glue at neck. I chose to sew on a carrot to the back side of elastic. I cut two carrot shaped pieces from foam (you can also use felt). I inserted pieces of green thread and sewed this on to the elastic.

Anything else you'd like to share about your pin cushion patterns? These are fun and inexpensive to make and take little amounts of material to create. If you sew, it's nice to have a place for pins close by and any Mom would love her very own pin cushion!
