These days, Cinco de Mayo is seen as a day to celebrate Mexican culture and achievements. It is not a public holiday. Read more about Cinco de Mayo.
National Nurses Day
Monday, May 6, is National Nurses Day. Some even spend the entire week honoring our nurses. This year, that would stretch from May 6 to May 12 (which is Florence Nightingale’s birthday). Within this week, there is also a National Student Nurses Day on May 8. On the Wednesday of National Nurses Week, we take a moment for National School Nurse Day. Let’s celebrate all our hard-working nurses this year!
Teacher Appreciation Week
Teacher Appreciation Week overlaps with National Nurses Day, running from May 6 to May 10 this year. Teachers spend so much time with our children, helping them grow and learn. That’s why the U.S. sets aside the first full week of May to honor them.
Mother's Day
Mother's Day is celebrated in the U.S. on the second Sunday of May each year. It is not a public holiday. People use the day to honor the contribution of mothers and mother figures. Many people give gifts and cards to their moms or organize special family outings. Read more about Mother's Day.
Memorial Day

Other Fun, Silly May Holidays
You’ve probably heard of many of the May holidays we listed above, but there are a ton of fun, silly observances in May that you might not have ever encountered. Here’s a few of our favorites:
What Does May Mean?
May is a month, sure, but there’s a deeper meaning behind why we call it May and how it came to be what we know today. According to Dictionary.com, May came from Latin and only came into English in the 1050s. It was originally the month of Maia, who was a Greek goddess. Maia was the mother of Hermes, who you might recognize as the messenger god.
How Many Calendar Days Are in May?
Before you start planning your holidays and vacations, just how many days are on a May calendar? May is one of the longer months, so you’ll find 31 days on our May calendars. If you also snag a June calendar below, you’ll find 30 days on that one.
What to Plant in May
Gardening is its own craft, and it can be such a rewarding one that it would be a crime not to mention it during this Spring month. You might feel like you’ve missed out on starting your garden by not getting a jump on things in April, but don’t stress! You aren’t too late at all. There are many things you can start in May and enjoy for the rest of the summer.
For example, you might start your beets in May, since they do the best from late spring to early summer. Taking a page from one of our May calendars above, you could also start planting some red hibiscus in May. Or get a jump on Halloween by planting some pumpkins and letting them grow over the summer.
That isn’t all. May is also a great time to start cabbage, summer squash, herbs, tomatoes, asters, and even melon. Of course, this will also depend on where exactly you live. So look up your growing zone and make sure that you live in the right climate for these plants.
The Zodiac in May
Maybe you believe in astrology, maybe you just like the aesthetics of it. Zodiac sigsn make for fun arts and crafts material, that's for sure.
There are two Zodiac signs that include at least part of May. If you’re a Taurus, your birthday may fall in May. If you were born in late May, however, you may find that you’re a Gemini instead. Taurus is represented by a bull. Some say that those born a Taurus like soft sounds, soothing smells, and good eats, basically all things luxurious and indulgent. Meanwhile, Gemini is the twins, and Geminis are said to embody duality, playfulness, and intellect.
