Free Printable Number Tracing Worksheets

Last updated: August 8, 2025 by the Homemade Gifts Team

I've been using number tracing worksheets with both my 4-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter as part of our daily learning time at home. It's been an easy and fun way to introduce them to numbers. My son is starting to understand how each number is formed, while my daughter is just getting the hang of following the dotted lines. These preschool number tracing worksheets have helped them both build hand strength and fine motor control.

What I love most is how these tracing numbers activities support more than just writing. As they trace and say the numbers out loud, they’re beginning to recognize and remember what each number looks like. My daughter still prefers the big, simple numbers, but my son’s confidence is growing so much—especially when we mix in a few preschool math worksheets like basic counting or matching.

Easy Number Tracing Worksheet

My 3-year-old daughter loves starting her day with the number tracing worksheets. She usually picks the 1-to-5 or 1-to-10 sheets and traces each number slowly with her favorite color markers. Even if she doesn’t do them perfectly she is having fun, and that’s all that matters at this age. I print them all from this collection, which makes it easy to find the perfect number tracing worksheets pdf free download for each child.

Hard Number Tracing Worksheets

I use these more advanced number tracing worksheets to challenge my 4-year-old son, who’s starting to feel confident tracing beyond 1–10. The sheets in this section, like 21–30 or even 91–100, are a little tricky, but these are his “big kid” worksheets for kindergarten at home. We usually do one or two at a time with lots of encouragement (and sometimes dinosaur stickers as a reward 😂).

Why Do Number Tracing?

Watching my children use tracing worksheets has shown me just how powerful this simple activity can be. My 4-year-old son has become much more confident with numbers. He wants to be an astronaut when he grows up, and at this rate - maybe he will!?

As for my daughter, she is developing motor control with the sheets, even if she still prefers to scribble now and then. These moments with our free preschool worksheets have helped turn learning into something they both enjoy and look forward to. I’ve also noticed how naturally it supports early math, especially when we pair it with simple counting worksheets.

Tips for Using Number Tracing Worksheets at Home

Trace & Say the Numbers

  1. Use the pre-k worksheets from this page and have your child trace each number slowly while saying it out loud. This helps connect the written shape to the spoken word.
  2. For younger learners, try starting with the simpler toddler worksheets here and work through just a few numbers at a time, repeating each one aloud as they trace.
  3. When you see numbers out in public, like at the store, see if your child can trace and say the number! My kids love doing this.

Number Recognition

  1. Start by having your children trace the numbers on the pre-k worksheets with their fingers, before moving onto a crayon or pencil.
  2. Don’t worry too much about perfection at this stage. I know my daughter just enjoys scribbling so I don’t get too bothered if she goes outside of the lines.
  3. As they trace, say the number aloud and encourage them to repeat it. That reinforces the recognition through site and sound.

Counting Practice

  1. After tracing each number, I ask my kids to count out the same number of small objects, like buttons or blocks, alongside the preschool worksheets.
  2. We turn the letter and number tracing worksheets into mini games by clapping, hopping, or pointing out items around the room to match the number they just traced. My son loves this!
  3. For an extra challenge, I draw small pictures (like apples or stars) next to each number and have the kids count and circle the right amount after tracing.
