What is the Day of the Dead?

People celebrate Day of the Dead, or Dia de los Muertos, on Nov. 1 and 2. The Mexican holiday invites communities to celebrate loved ones who have passed. Despite this, it isn’t a somber occasion, but rather, one filled with joy, color, and festivity.

Many families will put up “ofrendas,” or altars, during the holiday. They will decorate with flowers, candles, favorite foods, maybe even some of their loved ones' belongings in an effort to welcome the spirits of the dead home to share in the revelry. People celebrating Dia de los Muertos see death not as something to be feared, but as a natural part of life that we can embrace with love and joy.

Try These Dia de los Muertos Crafts

You can use your sugar skull coloring pages to make your own Dia de los Muertos celebration. Here are some ideas for crafting your own holiday.

Make Your Own Ofrenda

If you have a loved one to honor on Day of the Dead, that can be a delicate subject to broach with children, but you might draw on the traditions of this holiday to make it a little easier for them. One way to do that would be to make your own ofrenda. These can get extremely elaborate, but you can keep it simple at home. A framed photo, some candles, and a couple of favorite foods arrayed nicely can be a perfect starting point.

Decorate a Picture Frame

Use sugar skull coloring pages to help you decorate a picture frame to memorialize your loved one. A blank white or wooden picture frame works best. You can draw or paint designs onto it, or even cut out some of the flourishes in your sugar skull coloring pages and glue them around the frame for extra flair.

Use Tissue Paper to Make Bunting

In Mexican celebrations of Dia de los Muertos, you’ll see a lot of colorful decorations, including things like bunting. You can make your own at home with simple tissue paper. Get a variety of colors, then fold them in half and in half again. From there, draw on some designs. Try tracing parts of your sugar skull coloring pages if you’re looking for help or inspiration. Now cut out the designs, and just like with a paper snowflake, you’ve got a fun geometric design. String them together to hang them around the house.

Craft a Colorful Headband

For this craft, start with a blank headband. Try using some tissue paper for this as well. Balling it up makes it look like colorful flowers. Or use actual flowers! You can add other embellishments, like glitter and skulls. Remember, Dia de los Muertos is a bright and lively holiday, so even elements of your sugar skull coloring pages aren’t off limits when it comes to decorating your Day of the Dead headband.
