How to Carve a Pumpkin for Halloween
Now that you’ve chosen your design, sized it to fit, and have all your carving supplies—it’s time to get started! Get the most out of your pumpkin carving experience with these tips and tricks on how to clean, carve, and care for your pumpkin.
Getting Started
- Select your favorite pumpkin from the patch.
- The easiest way to get a complete set of supplies is to purchase a pumpkin carving kit. This kit should include a mini saw, a scoop, and other tools.
- While you might want to carve out the top of the pumpkin around the stem, it is actually easier to cut a hole at the bottom. This allows for the pumpkin to remain structurally sound and makes it easier to put in a light.
- Remove the pulp and seeds with the spoon and place guts into a large bowl. Scrape as much as you can from the inside of the pumpkin.
- You can actually dry out the seeds to plant more pumpkins for next year or to toast and eat!
How to Use Pumpkin Carving Stencils
- Tape your pumpkin stencil to the outside of the pumpkin.
- Carefully use a toothpick to puncture the paper and the pumpkin skin along the stencil lines. This will give you a dotted line to know where to cut once you remove the stencil.
- Carefully carve along the dotted line with a sharp knife.
- For extra depth, you can choose to scrape different levels of thickness into the design.
- Place a candle or a tea light inside to show off your pumpkin carving design!
Caring for Your Pumpkin
Animals LOVE pumpkins! A lot of internet searches will give you a recipe for a bleach-solution to help keep your pumpkin fresher longer. However, because wildlife will likely attempt to take a nibble from your wonderful jack-o’-lantern, we suggest a more organic approach.
- Use a vinegar solution, peppermint oil, vegetable oil, or coconut oil to prevent spoilage.
- Keep your pumpkin in a shady area.
- Use battery-powered tea lights instead of a real candle.
- Carve from the bottom to prevent collapse.
