Tips for Teaching Kids to Write the Letter A

Here are a few tips to help kids recognize, form, and write the letter A as they build their early handwriting skills.

Start with Letter Recognition

Help kids find uppercase and lowercase A in books, signs, and familiar words. Point out the differences between the two letters and encourage kids to identify them on their own. How many times can they find the letter A?

Practice Letter Formation

Use the numbered arrows on the worksheet to help kids learn how to form each letter. Also encourage them to use large, whole-body movements by writing letters in the air with arms or tracing them on the ground with their fingers. For more hands-on practice, they can practice writing the letters in shaving cream, sand, or a tray of salt. This multi-sensory approach helps kids become familiar with letter shapes and movements before practicing with a pencil.

  • Uppercase letter A formation tip: Have kids imagine drawing a mountain with two slanted sides, then adding a bridge across the middle.
  • Lowercase letter a formation tip: Remind kids to make a small curve that closes into a circle, then add a straight line down the right side. They should not lift their pencil during formation of the lowercase a.

Connect Letters to Sounds

Practice the short A sound using familiar words like apple, alligator, and astronaut. Say the letter name, then its short vowel sound, followed by a word that begins with that sound. For example, “A, /a/, apple”. Can they think of more words that begin with the same sound? Remember, these aren’t words to spell, just to say!
