Tips for Teaching Kids to Write the Letter B
Here are a few tips to help kids recognize, form, and write the letter B as they build their early handwriting skills.
Start with Letter Recognition
Help kids find uppercase and lowercase B in books, signs, and familiar words. Point out how uppercase B has two rounded bumps, while lowercase b has just one. Encourage kids to search for both letters and see how many they can find!
Practice Letter Formation
Use the numbered arrows on the worksheet to help kids learn how to form each letter. Also encourage them to use large, whole-body movements by writing letters in the air with arms or tracing them on the ground with their fingers. For more hands-on practice, they can practice writing the letters in shaving cream, sand, or a tray of salt. This multi-sensory approach helps kids become familiar with letter shapes and movements before practicing with a pencil.
- Uppercase letter B formation tip: Start with a tall straight line, then add two rounded bumps on the right, like two bubbles stacked on top of each other.
- Lowercase letter b formation tip: Kids often mix up lowercase b and d, so here’s a trick to help them remember! Think of a lowercase b as having a big belly that sticks out to the right. Start with a tall line down, then go back up partway and add the belly on the right side. They should not lift their pencil during formation of the lowercase b.
Connect Letters to Sounds
Practice the /b/ sound using familiar words like ball, bear and butterfly. Say the letter name, then its short sound, followed by a word that begins with that sound. For example, “B, /b/, ball”. Be careful not to add an extra “uh” sound at the end, turning /b/ into “buh”. Keeping the sound short and crisp helps kids hear and blend sounds together when they begin reading. Can they think of more words that begin with the same sound? Remember, these aren’t words to spell, just to say!
