I’ll never know, but you can find out, or just have fun decorating, with our selection of shamrock printables that are great for celebrating St. Patrick’s Day whether you grew up eating corned beef and cabbage or not.☘️🍀✂️

St. Patrick’s Day Facts

If you’re going to color shamrock templates and printables, you might as well learn while you do it! Here are some fascinating facts about St. Patrick’s Day that you can pair up with your shamrock templates. Maybe they’ll serve as inspiration!

Escaped Slave

St. Patrick was actually an escaped slave. Kidnapped at age 16, he was taken to Ireland, but managed to escape. He later returned to Ireland in the hopes of spreading Christianity.

Religious Celebration

It shouldn’t be surprising then that St. Patrick’s Day was originally a religious celebration. According to legend, St. Patrick drove snakes out of Ireland and used three-leaf clovers (like the ones in our shamrock templates!) to explain the Holy Trinity. Therefore, the earliest versions of St. Patrick’s Day included religious services and feasts.

An American Twist

Naturally, we Americans had to have our own take on things. When the holiday came over here, it became a lot more secular. Emigrants to the U.S. turned it into more of a party, like what we have today.

Cities Celebrate

Several American cities, especially those with large populations of Irish immigrants, decided to go big for St. Patrick’s Day, and I don’t just mean a few shamrock templates hung on the walls. Boston held the first St. Patrick’s Day parade in 1737, and New York followed in 1762. Then there was the very famous dying of the river in Chicago in 1962, a tradition the city keeps up to this day.
