The Oldest Reptile?
Turtles are one of the oldest reptiles in the world! Did you know that they’re older than crocodiles, alligators, and snakes? Turtles are actually from the time of the dinosaurs, dating back to over 200 million years ago. In addition to their long rein on Earth, they also live an incredibly long lifespan. Some turtles live more than 100 years!
Turtle, Sea Turtle, or Tortoise?
What exactly is the difference between a turtle, a sea turtle, and a tortoise? All of these animals are turtles, but there are some key differences. Use our helpful tools below to identify them!

What’s In a Shell?
Did you know that contrary to popular belief, turtles cannot leave their shells? Their iconic shells are bones and are a part of their skeleton! Consisting of more than 50 bones, the shell grows and sheds (much like a snake) as the turtle gets older and bigger. Despite not being able to remove their shells, land turtles can actually pull their limbs inside of the shell to hide and defend themselves from danger, however sea turtles cannot.
Sea Turtles!
Sea turtles are known for laying their eggs on beaches. They use their flippers to dig in the sand, then lay an astonishing 100-125 eggs. And they will lay multiple nests over several months! The eggs take a couple months to hatch, at which point the hatchlings make a mad dash for the sea and safety.
It is important to note that if you do get the opportunity to watch sea turtles hatch to not touch them. If you’d like to help them find their way to the ocean, just protect them from predators along the way. Baby sea turtles use a number of instincts and cues to find their way to the ocean by following the light of the moon and stars, gravity of the slope to the ocean, using Earth’s magnetic field, and determining the water motion. If you were to pick one up and place it in the water, you might end up confusing their internal GPS. The best thing to do is to keep quiet, stay in the dark, and witness the miracle!
The Most Endangered Vertebrates
Due to the destruction of habitats, water contamination, and harvesting, turtle species are quickly becoming in danger of extinction. There are only about 330 species of turtle (compared to 7,000 species of lizards and 3,000 species of snakes), and many of them are endangered. If we work together to protect habitats and prevent illegal harvesting, we can save them!
