The stars and stripes of an American flag outline are iconic, especially when you're looking for patriotic coloring pages to decorate for your favorite holidays. But I also like to put these US Flag printables to an educational use as well. Flags are among a nation's most important symbols, and every part of the American flag means something: from the fifty stars that represent each of America's states, to its thirteen strips, which represent its original thirteen colonies.
American flag coloring pages are a fun and educational activity for the kids while you're throwing hot dogs on the grill or waiting for the fireworks on patriotic holidays like the 4th of July, Veterans Day, or Memorial Day. Plus, you can teach about American history with an American flag coloring page any day of the year.

Coloring Tips for Your American Flag Coloring Pages
An American flag printable is a great activity on its own, but you can make the most of your American flag coloring pages by learning a bit more about colors. This is an awesome thing to teach kids during Veterans Day or Memorial Day when they may be taking a break from their normal studies and coursework.
Learn About Complementary Colors
Step one to understanding how you can use USA flag colors on your American flag coloring pages is learning about complementary colors. Fortunately, we have an entire guide for that. But here’s some of the basics.
Complementary colors are colors that sit opposite each other on the color wheel. You likely know these intuitively already. Red and green are opposites, and when you see them together, they’re very striking, sometimes even jarring. What that means for your American flag coloring page is that you can contrast the red on the flag against the green of, say, grass. This will make your American flag colors look even more vibrant.
Watch Out for Mixing Red and Blue
At the same time, there are some potential pitfalls with this approach. You could accidentally mix colors to get an unexpected result. Red and blue are both USA flag colors, but you don’t want to accidentally mix them on your American flag printable. If you do, you’ll get purple instead of any of the colors of the American flag! I certainly won’t judge if you want to wear all purple to your 4th of July BBQ, but it might not be the best effect for your flag coloring pages.
Think About the Rest of the Image As Well
Don’t just think about your American flag colors. Consider the rest of your American flag coloring page as well! As noted above, you can use the background for a great contrast, such as putting green grass behind the red of the flag itself. You can also think about the colors of the sky and other objects in the image. If your red is very warm, for example, you may want to look for a warm-toned blue for the sky. In this way, you can match the overall “vibes” of the image.
There’s More to the Flag Than Red, White, and Blue
Remember, there’s more to the flag than just red, white, and blue! If you’re brave enough to try some shading, you can do that using unexpected colors. A little purple in the blue parts of your flag can provide nice shadows, for example. Think more broadly than the colors of the American flag. You might just surprise yourself. And if you don’t like the result, you can always print out a new American flag coloring page. We won’t stop you!
Fourth of July Coloring Pages
The Fourth of July can be a super fun holiday for the kids, but sometimes you need activities that they can do before the fireworks. If they're already tired of tag and outdoor games, a Fourth of July coloring page can be a great activity for some good, calm fun.
