Coloring Tips for Your Nativity Coloring Pages

Now that you’ve picked out your coloring pages, here are a few tips to get you started coloring them. Remember: There are no right or wrong ways to color. These are just helpful tips!

Use Shading and Light to Your Advantage

We think of the nativity as a nighttime scene. Maybe you even chose a nativity coloring page with a big guiding star in the night sky. But whether it’s night or day, you can use shadow and light to your advantage while coloring.

Think about where the light is coming from - maybe it’s that big star overhead! Then add shadows for a bit more depth. There might be shadows under the manger, for example. If you’re stuck, you could look up images of nativity scenes and try to see where they placed light and shadows.

Know Your Complementary Colors

Complementary colors can make a big difference in your nativity coloring pages. And you don’t need to be an art major to understand them. Complementary colors are opposites on the color wheel, and mixing them makes neutral shades like gray and brown. This is important because you don’t want to end up with those colors accidentally.

Also, by knowing which colors are opposites, you can know which colors are more similar. A blue can become a purple because they’re close on the color wheel, for example. If you want a color wheel to use as a reference, check out our complementary colors page.

Get Creative with Colors

All of this being said, you should feel free to get creative. There are no rules when it comes to your nativity coloring pages. You can color them however you want. The same goes for your kids. Maybe they’re giving baby Jesus green skin, but that’s okay. It’s just them expressing their creativity. Nativity coloring pages don’t need to be perfectly realistic to evoke the spirit of the Christmas season.
