Axolotl Facts

You have probably seen a cute baby axolotl quite a few times by now, and not only on an axolotl coloring page. But how much do you really know about axolotls? Test your knowledge or possibly learn something new with these fun axolotl facts.

What Are Axolotls?

We have talked about axolotls a lot here, but what the heck are they, exactly? The truth is kind of wild. They’re a type of reptile, a salamander, to be precise. But unlike many salamanders, axolotls keep some of their larval features forever instead of shedding or growing out of them.

They live in only one place in the entire world: Lake Xochimilco in Mexico City. That makes them exceptionally rare and, unfortunately, endangered. Scientists estimate there are less than 1,000 left in the wild, partially because they’re losing their habitat, partially because of pollution, and partially because of invasive species like tilapia and carp that prey on them.

Axolotl Colors

As you ponder your axolotl coloring page, you might wonder what colors you should use to color it. That’s a tougher question than it seems!

They can be dark brown with black speckling, but albino variations are common, and are likely what you’re imagining when you think about a cute axolotl. There are a couple other variations as well, so in the end, you really can use whatever colors you like!

If you go with albino, it can be challenging, but red or pink may be a good place to start, as the translucent skin gives them an overall pink-ish appearance. Axolotls in Minecraft

The inclusion of axolotls in the game Minecraft has exploded the awareness and popularity of these creatures. Some players even use them to their advantage when they need to fight in water because they’ll attack fish, squid, drowned, and guardians. You can find them in lush caves.

In the game, they come in a wide range of colors. The “leucistic” color is similar to the albino appearance of a real baby axolotl, but Minecraft also has gold, cyan, blue, and “wild” colored axolotls. If you are stuck on how to color your axolotl coloring page, you might refer to any of these colors. They’re a lot brighter and more cartoony, but they can be a lot of fun.

Other Crazy Axolotl Facts

Like their Minecraft counterparts, real axolotls are prone to biting. However, they don’t have any teeth, so you won’t have much to worry about. Despite this, they’re carnivores and are considered predators. They will munch on worms, small fish, insect larvae, crustaceans, and mollusks.

And here’s perhaps the weirdest fact of all - they have no eyelids! Since they never leave the water, they never go through metamorphosis, which is when their eyelids would normally develop.

Frog Coloring Pages

If you think axolotls are cute, you should see other aquatic critters like frogs! Okay, you've probably seen a frog before, so celebrate all their awesome shapes and coloring with these frog coloring pages.
