These pumpkin carving ideas will give you the spookiest porch on the block! 🎃
Every Halloween season, I participate in a pumpkin carving and decorating contest, so I usually have a few big pumpkin carving ideas in mind. Then I’m sitting at the table with my newly purchased pumpkin, pumpkin seeds everywhere, wondering if I can actually pull them off! One of my favorite parts is seeing what everyone else comes up with, from scary faces and goofy grins to unique lighting and designs I never would have thought of myself.
Sometimes all you need is a starting point to figure out what your pumpkin will look like. These pumpkin carving ideas use our printable templates as a jumping-off point, with ways to make each design your own. A little paint, an extra detail, or a different glow from inside can take the same stencil in a whole new direction.

Unique Ways to Customize Your Pumpkin
There’s plenty to carve beyond a jack-o’-lantern face! Start with one of these ideas, then add creative details to build a scene or capture a favorite movie theme. You’ll also find more ways to customize your pumpkin and tips to help your finished design last longer.
- Try mixing elements from different templates or adding a surprise detail on the back of your pumpkin.
- Combine carved openings with painted details and shallow scratches for texture, or save pieces of rind to attach as facial features using toothpicks.
- A hat, glasses, or a few smaller pumpkins nearby can give your pumpkin a whole story without adding more cuts.
- Experiment with colored or flickering battery-powered lights, checking your pumpkin in the dark to see which details stand out.
Don’t forget to step back occasionally to look at the whole display. Sometimes one unexpected detail is all it needs.
Easy Pumpkin Carving Ideas
- One of the easiest ways to add details is to paint them on! Carve the eyes and mouth so light can shine through, then paint on eyebrows, rosy cheeks, or a few freckles.
- Place a battery-powered LED light inside to see your pumpkin’s expression come to life, or skip the carving and use your stencil to guide a painted design you can display under a porch light.
- Your added details don't have to be a face, try giving them an environment. For example, with the bats below, you could carve all three bats above a painted skyline, adding yellow windows to the buildings, or skip the city and arrange them around a crescent moon for a Halloween night scene.
Simple Pumpkin Face with Painted on Details
Your pumpkin doesn’t need tiny cutouts or an elaborate design to have personality. For beginners, a face with larger eyes and a wide grin gives you fewer fiddly details to work around. Use this featured stencil to plan your cuts, then take your time carving one section at a time.
Bat Signal Pumpkin
Turn your pumpkin into a little piece of Gotham City with a glowing Bat-Signal.
- Choose one bat from the stencil and draw an oval around it, then carve away the space between the bat and the oval. Leave small bridges of rind connecting the bat to the surrounding pumpkin so it stays attached.
- When lit from inside, the bat will stand out as a dark silhouette against the bright opening.
Scary Pumpkin Carving Ideas
- Add spooky (and even fleshy!) elements with shallow carving. Remove the outer skin and scrape away some of the flesh without cutting all the way through. These thinner areas will glow more softly than the open eyes and mouth, giving the face another layer of detail.
- Experiment with other color LEDs to light the scary pumpkins from the inside, such a red or purple lights.
Scary Pumpkin Face
Those pointed teeth and slanted eyes already give this pumpkin a menacing expression! Follow the stencil’s jagged mouth carefully, cutting out the gaps while leaving the teeth attached to the pumpkin.
- For an extra gruesome touch, carve a few teardrop shapes beneath the mouth to look like blood dripping from its teeth.
- You can also try shallow carving around the eyes. Check with a battery-powered light inside as you work to see where you need to scrape a little more.
Bubbling Cauldron Pumpkin
This bubbling cauldron would fit right into a witch’s kitchen, a Harry Potter potions classroom, or a Hocus Pocus display! Carve the cauldron and flames, keeping the strips of rind between them intact.
- Add a few round bubbles above the pot alongside the stencil’s angular shapes.
- Try scraping the bubbles rather than cutting them out completely, leaving a thin layer of pumpkin flesh so they look like little pockets of glowing potion.
- A green battery-powered LED light inside can give your potion an unusual color, while a handwritten “Polyjuice Potion” label beside the pumpkin adds the Harry Potter touch.
- If you want the fire to stand out during daylight, paint red and yellow accents around the carved flames.
Funny Pumpkin Carving Ideas
- Consider the shape of the pumpkin and how you can exaggerate its unique shape to make a face more funny.
- Add silly details with paint or even added pieces of pumpkin.
- Make all your silly pumpkin faces appear to be reacting to each other or to something else in your Halloween display.
Silly Jack-o-Lantern
With its crossed eyes, two front teeth, and tongue sticking out, this pumpkin looks like it’s trying to make everyone laugh! Carve around the two teeth carefully, leaving them attached to the top of the mouth, and keep the strip of pumpkin between the grin and the tongue intact.
- A wide, squat pumpkin gives that oversized grin plenty of room, so consider the shape when choosing where to place your stencil.
- For another silly touch, save a piece of rind and attach it above the eyes with toothpicks to create a raised eyebrow.
- You could also carve this face on a second pumpkin with the stencil flipped horizontally, then display the pair facing each other as though they’re making silly faces at one another.
Bigfoot Pumpkin
Some pumpkin carving ideas are funny just because of their subject matter. Are you surrounded by a lot of bigfoot believers? Maybe you are one yourself. This bigfoot pumpkin is easier than it looks.
- This shaggy hair might look difficult to carve, but don't worry! You don't have to carve every bit of fur perfectly. The lines are more like suggestions, so you can do whatever shagge sections you want to. I recommend cutting out the main outline first, then cutting the fur second. You can also cut the fur more shallow, so that it gives a general glow.
- Paint on your favorite Bigfoot meme. Or pair it with pumpkin designs of some of your other favorite cryptids.
- Lightly carve a path or tree that Bigfoot is going to hide behind.
Cute Pumpkin Carving Ideas
- Cute images tend to be very round, which can be difficult to carve. You can start by cutting out the basic straight shape first, then cute the rounded parts as finer details. For finer details, you want a small sharp knife or a small serrated knife. Otherwise, just let yourself carve slowly.
- Feel free to alter or elaborate on the design. Move the stars around or add more stars.
Dragon Pumpkin
If your household is full of dragon fans like my classroom, this fire-breathing pumpkin will fit right in with the current dragon craze!
- Give this fire-breathing dragon its own treasure hoard by arranging gold-painted stones and costume jewelry around the pumpkin’s base. You could be inspired by How to Train Your Dragon and add a "Welcome to Berk” sign, or you could lean into a medieval theme with a miniature cardboard castle behind it.
- For something unexpected, continue the flame around the side of the pumpkin with painted swirls and a few carved sparks.
- An amber flickering LED light inside will make it look as though your dragon is lighting up the whole scene.
Cute Skull Pumpkin Carving Idea
These two little skulls scream cute, not scary! This design uses negative space: carving away the dark background lets the skulls stand out in the pumpkin rind you leave behind. Keep small bridges of rind connecting each skull to the surrounding pumpkin so they stay in place, and take your time around the teeth and cheeks.
- You can simplify the bow by tying a real ribbon around the stem instead of carving it.
- For a cute finishing touch, place your pumpkin beside two miniature pumpkins, each with a ribbon of its own.
Fairy Pumpkin Ideas
These flying fairies would feel right at home in Neverland, a woodland garden, or dancing beneath a star-filled sky.
- Use both figures or choose just one, enlarging it to give yourself more room around the delicate arms and wings.
- For those narrow details, try shallow carving with a small pumpkin sculpting tool, leaving the figures in a thin layer of pumpkin flesh rather than cutting all the way through.
- Add a trail of tiny carved holes around the fairies to look like pixie dust glowing in the dark.
- You could also paint a green dress onto one figure and arrange leaves around the pumpkin’s base to carry the woodland theme into your display.
How to Help Your Carved Pumpkin Last Longer
After all that work, you’ll want your pumpkin to last through its Halloween appearance!
- Scoop out the seeds and loose, stringy flesh thoroughly, then keep your finished pumpkin somewhere cool and out of direct sunlight.
- Choose a battery-powered light instead of a real candle, since candle heat can speed up deterioration.
- If you’re carving for a party or contest, save the carving closer to the event rather than expecting your masterpiece to last for weeks.
